10/10/00 New sci-fi epic is "go for launch"
Wanderlust
is a new ongoing series filled with wild space battles and daring espionage. But as important as those ingredients are to the comic, another vital quality is the approach. Series creator
Bryant Shiu
describes
Wanderlust
as possessing "the intensity of thrilling sci-fi anime combined with a distinct edginess and focus on characterization."
While providing pulse-pounding dogfights between squadrons of weapon-laden mecha and the intrigue of deadly, elusive spies, he'll be exploring the backdrop for the story as well as the different motivations of the characters. "The scope of the Interplanetary League is promptly established and past League conflicts will be addressed from time to time, though the unidentified threat is always at the fore,"
Shiu
said. "Soon after the first issue, we'll gain more insight into the characters, starting with one of the most experienced League pilots, and find out why he is as good as he is. Which begs the question, as you see the fighting escalate, 'Is anybody good enough to help successfully safeguard the colonial worlds from this new danger?' They may be driven, talented men and women, but they're called upon to do an impossible task."
Handling the artwork are penciller/colorist
Brett Weldele
and inker
Michael Halbleib
. "Mike's been around for years and is one of the best kept secrets in the business."
Shiu
said. "As for Brett, he's drawn outstanding stuff, handling the furious mecha battles, character work, and even good-old, white-knuckled brawling with terrific skill."
With the right art team,
Shiu
plans to push the story as fervently as possible. "The status quo for the characters and their situations will be rocked quite a few times in the course of the series, and then it'll be rocked some more. A fevered pitch is what I'm ultimately aiming for and that's what readers should expect from
Wanderlust
."

Bryant Shiu
is the writer/creator of
Wanderlust
. Raised on
Marvel
comics and badly dubbed anime during the eighties, his course was clear. Too bad he followed up that decade only with reading more comics and watching more anime in the nineties.
Wanderlust
is his first ongoing series.
Brett Weldele
pencils, colors, and designs the
Wanderlust
series. He's the letterer for Issue One as well, but with the next issue,
Bryant
decided to handle most of the lettering chores for fear of
Brett
reaching through his computer and throttling him on the other end.
Brett's
credits include a ten-page story and painted cover for
Confessions of a Cereal Eater
, published by
NBM
, and storyboards for the upcoming film
Demonium
.
Michael Halbleib
is an accomplished inker who has worked on a number of titles for
Marvel
and other publishers.
The Punisher Kills the Marvel Universe
, a masterpiece of mayhem he inked, was recently reprinted. He is the writer/artist of
Vortech the Wonder Mule
, a title he created and published under his company,
Black Peke
. Some of his most recent work can be found in the pages of
Anne Rice comics
.
